I don't know much about memory editing but I can say several WoG commands can create this bug, where you get strange things and crashes.
For example, this script for my Empire III map sometimes created "sound volume" instead of pathfinding expert icon. Clicking on it make the game crash. Two days later, the bug dissipate alone, and never returns:
ZVSE
!?LE52/126/1; [Old ruins trigger]
!!IF:V1/0; [Sets flag 1 to 0]
!!HE-1:A=127; [Check to see if Maximus has Werewolfs killer]
!!IF&1:Q1^Do you give me the Werewolfs killer?^; [If yes, do question]
!!IF&1:M^The potion evaporates and a full of fish cloud leaves in direction the monsters. Soon their bones will strew the ground^; [If answer to question is yes, then display this message]
!!HE152&1:A-127; [If answer yes, remove Werewolfs killer]
!!MO46/138/1&1:O1; [If answer yes, stop Werewolfs growing]
!!MO46/138/1&1:G0; [If answer yes, change Werewolfs' numbers to 0]
!!UN:L46/138/1/1000;
!!MO46/138/1&1:M^The cloud destroyed completely the threat. All what remains are bones and a lugubrious silence--but for how long?^; [If answer yes, change Werewolfs text]
!!LE52/126/1&1:M^This is a lugubrious place. Better leave before something strange happens.^; [If yes, change ruins text]
!!LE52/126/1&1:Z5; [If yes, disable ruins trigger]
It is clear that the script has nothing which could affect the memory. The code is awful basic. Still...
